Havia ouvido falar de relatos de animais inóspitos antes num frio país do hemisfério norte onde o qual os pesquisadores adentraram a geleira para nunca mais retornar. Nessa expedição havia perdido uma pessoa o qual a amizade e estima eram altas me enlutando por longos dias…

Porém, os relatos daquela isolada ilha pareciam render fotos na internet de difícil refutação. A menos que fosse trabalho de algum mago de efeitos visuais de Hollywood num primoroso boneco animatrônico de látex, como biólogo não conseguia refutar as imagens de um ser cuja fisiologia parecia ter evoluído de um galho próprio da evolução sendo distante de qualquer outra espécie discernível ainda que com traços de mamíferos quadrúpedes, mas escamas como de réptil remetendo a uma gárgula como das arquitetura templária dos tempos medievais. Dentre esse vídeo viral onde mostrava esse ser agonizando, outras fotos mostravam similares quadrúpedes reptilianos, um deles alado como as imagens dos lendários dragões como se aqueles seres quiméricos tivessem saído dos contos medievais ou dos irmãos Grimm. Outros tipos de relatos eram ouvidos em particular em determinadas épocas do ano, onde pescadores da única e pequena vila da região, narravam seres igualmente semelhantes a grifos e mesmo um mais entusiasmado relatava que seu avô teria visto um ciclope.

Lógico que, como cientista, primeiro usava a Navalha de Ockhan e de imediato os relatos iniciais eram descartados como meras histórias de pescador e lendas passadas de geração em geração, como daquela pequena e tradicional vila no mediterrâneo. A ilha estava a pouco mais de uma centena de quilômetros da Grécia, e desde que o vídeo da quimera viralizou na internet, tanto a mídia quanto turistas curiosos passaram a visitar o lugar que possuía menos de 400 habitantes, mas uma geografia vasta e diversa, com bosques e grutas vulcânicas que remetiam ao que acreditavam ser sua origem, um vulcão extinto na parte norte da ilha.

Formamos uma equipe sob os auspícios financeiros de uma TV do Brasil, e junto com minha filha docente de biologia da UFF reunimos alguns doutorandos e equipamentos básicos e partimos pensando tudo não se passar de um belo golpe de marketing a fim de atrair o turismo para a região pouco conhecida, mas de mil encantos.

A viagem fora longa e tortuosa, de avião e do avião barco até a ilha onde fomos recebidos por um rústico pescador de espessa barba negra como dos antigos piratas de iguais histórias antigas. O homem era um veterano do mar numa família o qual a genealogia era de gerações de pescadores acostumados com as maiores severidades e adversidades do mar e do incógnito onde narrava que desde seus primeiros parentes naquela ilha aparentava que certas fases da lua influíam no aparecimento esporádico, mas episódico de seres que até mesmo teria matado um primo dele há 30 anos. Em particular aquele período do zênite lunar num ápice de aproximação da Lua onde a força gravitacional do astro satélite iluminava as noites das cheias de maré.

— Como os lobisomens, estes seres tem maior propensão a surgirem nesse período lunar, como será hoje à noite — comentou o homem de fala rude, mas objetiva. – Nesse dia, sempre às três horas da madrugada, quem estiver em terra firme e acordado a essa hora, morre. A menos em alto mar estamos seguro, mas alguns viram… a hora proibida.

— Ou talvez por ser o melhor momento para pesca noturna pela visibilidade que permite ver a noite — comentou minha filha incrédula das afirmações dele. – Mesmo que a exemplo da visão periférica ela pode criar coisas que não existem.

— Não somos homens de instrução, mas somos de honestidade e caráter. Vou lhes mostrar a carcaça do réptil que encontramos. Esses seres farejam nossa consciência desperta.
O homem nos orientou entre seis turistas e um jornalista que nos fitava curiosos a adentrar o centro pesqueiro onde um congelador que funcionava a gerador estava. Ele adentrou e levantou a tampa atraindo a todos a fitar o bicho de olhos saltados e boca aberta com grandes garras.

— Ouvimos histórias de complexos militares secretos numa ilha japonesa onde dizem haver uma porta para o inferno, mas…

— São apenas rumores, senhor. Pode ter certeza! — comentou Angelina Silva, minha promissora filha das ciências biológicas tendo apenas 23 anos.

— Porém, isto merece uma atenção especial — respondi, tirando o corpo congelado, com ajuda de minha filha. Ele possuía cerca de um metro.

Flashes de fotos dos turistas e murmúrios se ouviram em torno da criatura enquanto a colocamos sobre a mesa. Cutuquei o ser petrificado pelo frio do congelador e suas feições tenebrosas que evocavam de fato mitos ancestrais de seres que nunca existiram a nossa ciência. E aquilo de fato não era um boneco de látex, mas abaixo de escamas tecidos gelatinosos e cartilagens em posições que parecia remeter a um amálgama de réptil com anfíbio. Um ser sem qualquer paralelo com alguma família ou espécie da combalida árvore da vida de Darwin. O achado era legítimo, fosse o que fosse!

Ficamos o resto da tarde dissecando a criatura e colendo amostras de DNA, tecidos e tentando identificar os órgãos afim de traçar qualquer paralelo que tornasse possível identificar ele a alguma família de anfíbios.

— Isso é coisa de criptozoologia! Nunca vi nada parecido — comentou Angelina petrificada no êxtase da descoberta.

— São como demônios, como minha avó dizia — comentou o pescador, coçando a barba.

O sujeito pegou um caneco de latão de cerveja e virou todo goela adentro vindo a seguir um arroto e limpando a barba com as mangas de sua camisa goleiro. Coçou a barba novamente e suas partes baixas antes de cruzar os braços e permanecer paralisado fitando todos em torno daquilo. Ele parecia pouco atemorizado ou perplexo com aquilo, como se fosse pra ele apenas um peixe incomum.

A noite caiu e não tivemos um veredito quando paramos para jantar na humilde casa de madeira da família do pescador. Lá, uma senhora de avançada idade estava sobre uma cadeira de balanço aos nos receber com um sorriso cordial enquanto sentávamos a mesa. Apesar de serem rústicos os habitantes eram cordiais e acolhedores sob a camada sem máscaras da falta de etiqueta social, naquele momento a anciã interrompeu da cadeira e disse.

— Não vão dormir tarde, meninos. Sempre amo ver novos rostos, mas hoje em especial caso durmam depois da três…

— Eles sabem disso, vovó! – comentou o pescador a interrompendo.

— Seu tio-avô deu a vida para me salvar naquele dia que acordem com aquele Sátiro. Como Pã, aquele ser encarnava a metade má do conhecimento do bem e do mal em essência. Era a parte cruel e sádica do fruto proibido feita afim de representar tudo de repulsivo, doentio contra tudo que nos faz humanos.

— Compreendemos os anseios de vocês, mas consideramos antecipado para termos quaisquer conclusões. Faremos todo possível para tentar descobrir o que são e de onde vieram tais criaturas

— comentou Angelina de modo comedido tentando apaziguar e harmonizar os ânimos.

— A moça não entende. Eles são sistematicamente insidiosos da crueldade intencional. Diferente de qualquer animal conhecido eles não fazem tais coisas por mera sobrevivência, para se alimentar ou se proteger, mas apenas pelo prazer em si em nos fazer sofrer lentamente antes de nos matar, as vezes eles nem comem os corpos das vítimas e nem estamos no território deles ou os atacando, mas apenas nos defendendo — respondeu o pescador limpando a boca e barba com comidas com o guardanapo.

— Por qual motivo então não se mudaram?

— Os ataques cessaram por décadas, não havia relatos deles por muitos anos até que voltaram mais fortes. Estávamos começando a esquecer como uma mera lenda, porém…

A conversa seguiu onde relatos de vários outros moradores e seus parentes mais antigos tiveram relatos similares narrados pela anciã, ela associava o surgimento do mal ao vulcão extinto o que não possuía qualquer fundo hipotético de ciência. Porém, ao irmos dormir iria por a prova tudo o quanto a ciência acreditava. Após insistentemente a idosa falar para não estarmos acordados as 3 horas da madrugada minha filha Angelina era insone e havia esquecido seus tranquilizantes. Um mal inominável e absoluto o qual o clima hostil inebriava a alma no estupor tóxico e negativo que lhe precedia, sentia a impotência total e absoluta ante algo que esmagava e dilacerava todas as esperanças ao âmago do espírito a nos abandonar a insanidade da torpeza total.

Porém, meu amor por Angelina era mais forte e reunindo forças ao lado do brutamontes saímos da casa iluminada pela Lua cheia. Seguimos uma trilha de sangue e trapos da roupa de Angelina rasgadas pelas garras que lhe tragava as brumas do inferno do qual nem a Lua cheia ousava desvelar.

Comecei a gritar sem saber o motivo ao fitar um vulto abominável meio humano subir a monte onde haveria o vulcão extinto. Atirei a esmo no meu desespero como se o grito e os tiros fossem apenas para matar meu próprio medo ante o temor de se agravar como uma loucura.

Ela sumiu e seus gemidos se dissiparam ante o farfalhar da vegetação ao vento. O brutamontes do pescador destoava seu porte ao vê-lo com olhos mareados e sentindo-se ele mesmo impotente ante aquele monstro cujo o prazer era a dor e o sofrimento de suas vítimas.

O medo era uma droga poderosa com efeitos avassaladores a psique de modo que vencidos por algo do além apenas nos resignamos a letargia da baixa estima ante a angústia de nos sentir totalmente a mercê das intempéries daquela coisa inominável senão como encarnação de nossos piores pesadelos. A anciã estava certa e agora alardeava que aquelas bestas um dia iria emergir ao mundo e como os gafanhotos do Apocalipse atormentar toda a humanidade ao trazer juntos o inferno.

A parca ciência de minha formação acadêmica parecia inútil de modo que permanecemos o resto da noite acordados até que ao amanhecer a policia chegou num bote isolando a área como cena do crime, mas que na ausência de provas sólidas concluíram se tratar de algum assassino serial que teria vindo misturado aos turistas. Isolaram a ilha por uma semana, interrogaram a todos indistintamente. Dos moradores aos turistas, mas sem ter uma menor pista sobre a desaparecida senão amostras de sangue e tecido de sua roupa.

Fui esmagado por dentro, a vida perdeu todo significado num niilismo torpe e espúrio que assombrou a todos num único ato ao render as centenas de pessoas contra uma única criatura pelo simbólico mal funesto que fez. Quando voltei para casa fui afastado da UFF e passei os meses seguintes entre terapias. Pesadelos irrompiam as noites, fui tomado por depressão e síndrome do pânico, havia sido quebrado por dentro, minha alma esmagada e entre um olhar vazio e outro pelo buraco que criou-se na minha vida tentei seguir a diante mesmo que até mesmo suspeitaram ter tido um surto psicótico, mas que os fatos inegáveis não permitiam o laudo ser um fato contra os fatos.

Os anos se passaram, até que ao se tornar uma década parecia ter-me seguido a carreira acadêmica preenchendo o vazio abissal da desigualdade massacrante daquele mal poderoso contra nossa impotência e passividade, até que um dia uma notícia ao ser recebida me consternou levando-me as mesmas sensações nauseabundas da avassaladora droga do medo, minha filha havia voltado ao mundo dos vivos.

Pelos relatos ela havia sido encontrada vagando na mesma ilha a noite, desorientada e aturdida ela falava coisas aparentemente sem nexo, como dizendo que o outro ‘eu’ dela havia tido a carne penetrada fatalmente em culto aos seres que habitavam uma dimensão ulterior aonde uma evolução biológica proibitiva ao doentio predatório de um sadismo insaciável havia progredido, como se os antigos predadores pré-históricos evoluíssem a uma sencência sistematicamente cruel e sádica, de onde as lendas e mitos antigos advinham, como um mundo infernal habitado pelas criaturas míticas da criptozoologia.

Viajei para a ilha a fim de encontra-la. Parecia fisicamente incólume apesar dos relatos sem coerência. Porém, sabia que aquele mal evocava insanidades mil provenientes das mentes desesperadas sob o rigor massacrante do medo absoluto. Os relatos vívidos eram consistentes ao do inferno literal e supremo.

Ao encontra-la seus olhares eram vazios e sem esperança, esboçou um sorriso forçado na pálida tentativa social que desconhecia naquele mundo interior ou ulterior.

– Sinto muito por sua filha – comentou ela. – Fugia da gárgula guiada por aquele vil homem. A porta para o bem e mal ainda está aberta. Passamos anos pesquisando essas entradas naturais ao além-mundo por anos, são como buracos de minhoca sensíveis as menores intempéries gravitacionais. Grupos que defendiam sob a camada de secretismo o privilégio ao crime impune com alheios que não foram responsáveis, ao preço de tê-lo sofrido antes. Aqueles eram os meandros de uma corrente do mal que se ampliava na reprodução do que sofreram sobre alheios sem relação direta, e estes como seus embaixadores preparavam o mundo para que esse inferno emergisse a convergir das as possibilidades negativas de injustiça e crueldade a este mal venerado por psicopatas e hedonistas sádicos, a hora proibida ainda iria vir caso não combatêssemos esse mal supremo a cada injustiça, crueldade e desigualdade sádica.
